What to Expect at a Shelter
Information about the services and environment of a domestic violence shelter.
A DV shelter is a safe, confidential location where survivors and their children can stay for free to escape an abusive situation. They are much more than just a place to sleep; they are centers of support and resources.
Shelters provide a wide range of free services, including: 24/7 crisis hotlines, safety planning, counseling and support groups for adults and children, case management, legal advocacy (help with protective orders), and assistance with finding housing, jobs, and childcare.
Most shelters have shared living spaces, like kitchens and living rooms, with private bedrooms for families. There are rules to ensure everyone's safety and comfort. You will be assigned an advocate who will work with you to create a personalized plan to achieve your goals for safety and independence.
If you have time to prepare, try to bring: identification (ID, birth certificates, social security cards), important legal documents, a few changes of clothes, essential medications, and a favorite toy or comfort item for your children. However, if you have to leave quickly, just bring yourself and your children. Shelters can help you replace these items.
