Location Sharing

Review the many ways your location might be shared, sometimes without you realizing it.

Device-Level Location Services (iOS & Android)

Check your phone's main settings to see which apps have access to your location. You can often choose to share location 'Never', 'Ask Next Time', 'While Using the App', or 'Always'. Choose the most restrictive setting you are comfortable with.

App-Specific Sharing (Find My, Google Maps, Social Media)

Many apps have their own location-sharing features. This includes 'Find My' on Apple devices, location sharing on Google Maps, and features within apps like SnapChat's Snap Map or Facebook's Nearby Friends. Review each one individually.

Carrier and Family Accounts (AT&T, Verizon, etc.)

Some mobile phone family plans have location-tracking services. If you are on a shared plan, the primary account holder may be able to see your location. Consider getting a separate plan if this is a concern.

Photos and Metadata

When you take a photo, it often saves the location (GPS coordinates) in the photo's metadata. When you share the photo, you may also be sharing your location. You can turn this feature off in your camera's settings.
